Cargo Claims Handling for NYK Bill of Lading effective 1 April 2018

Cargo Claims Process and Policy
  • When loss or damage has occurred, please immediately notify your local NYK office.
  • Your cargo insurer should also be notified at the same time.
  • If loss or damage was found during cargo devanning, the process should be stopped immediately if possible, and please notify your local NYK office. After evaluation, NYK may arrange an independent surveyor for cargo inspection, so as to determine the cause and extent of loss or damage. However, the survey report from NYK appointed surveyor is for NYK internal use only.
  • The cargo interest is encouraged to engage a surveyor to ascertain and collate evidence of the loss or damage.
  • The cargo interest should take all necessary steps to mitigate the loss.
  • Claims must be presented in writing. Please ensure that the documents listed below are provided with your claim:
  1. Detailed claim statement, including NYK B/L number, vessel name and voyage number, description of the damage, outlining the claim amount, and the reason that you consider NYK to be liable for the alleged loss or damage.
  2. A copy of the original bill of lading.
  3. A copy of the original cargo invoice(s) and packing list(s).
  4. Survey Report (if available)
  5. Photos of damaged cargo and/or damaged container (if available)
  6. Other relevant documents
